Alex syrup is combination of medications which is used for the treatment of dry cough. It helps to treat sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, flu chest congestion and even throat irritation which are actually the allergic symptoms of viral infection.

So, this drug is recommended by physician to treat these allergies and common cold. This syrup is combination of Dextromethorphan, Guaifenesin, and chlorpheniramine. Let’s elaborate their functions that how they treat these allergic problems.

  • Dextromethorphan: This drug belongs to anti-tussive class of drug which act on CNS increasing threshold of cough centre. On the other way around, it can also act peripherally in the respiratory tract and helps in decreasing impulses.
    They do not eliminate cough rather helps in controlling cough. As mentioned, it is used for only dry cough. It works on synthetic central NMDA (N-methyl D-aspartate) receptor antagonist but important point is that it does not depress mucociliary function of airway function.
  • Chlorpheniramine: This drug is the class of H1 antihistamines which is commonly added to anti-tussive preparation to gain relief from cough. It works by working as a sedative and anti-cholinergic effect. But it does not have expectorant properties. They work well on respiratory allergic sites in treating cough.
  • Phenylephrine: It is alpha-1 agonist which works as vasoconstrictor. Due to this property, it increases blood pressure. It also has little affect on action of cardiac muscles but had prominent action on reflex bradycardia. It is used as nasal decongestant and also has mydriasis property.

Dry cough

It can be defined as the cough without mucus or phlegm which is commonly known as non-productive cough. It has symptoms like tickling throat due to cold, flue, any kind of allergies, or throat irritation.

It also helps in relieving symptoms like watery eyes, running nose, sneezing, throat irritation or sore throat. It is safe and is effective within few minutes of administration.

Sore throat

It is characterized by irritation in throat due to which voice becomes hoarse and uncomfortable for one to speak.

  • Be cautious for interaction of syrup with alcohol. Consult doctor before taking it.

  • It is probably safe during breastfeeding. No significant research detected any significant risk to baby while breastfeeding.
