Aerocort Inhaler

by Anjita Yadav

Aerocort inhaler is used as an anti-asthmatic drug for the treatment of asthma including wheezing and shortness of breath. It works by relaxing the air passage muscles which results in easy breathing. It is a combination of two drugs that are Levosalbutamol and Beclomethasone dipropionate.

Mechanism

As it contains two drugs, I will discuss both of them separately.

  • Levosalbutamol: It acts as beta 2 adrenergic agonist working as a bronchodilator for treating asthma and also as uterine relaxant to avoid premature labour pain.
This drug acts as a beta 2 receptor stimulation, which then further increases cAMP responsible for the formation of bronchial muscle cells and thereby causing relaxation.
This cAMP in mast cells and inflammatory cells helps in decreasing mediator release. It helps in reversible airway obstruction and thus resulting in widening of bronchioles, but one should ask a physician if one has hypertension, ischaemic disease, or taking digitalis injections.
These are the fastest working bronchodilators with minimal side effects. It is taken by inhaling the drug mostly given through pressurized metered doses which dilates bronchioles within 5 min and its actions lasts for around 2-4 hours. It is used to terminate attack of asthma.
  • Beclomethasone: It is actually not a bronchodilator but a drug of class glucocorticoids which works by inhibiting inflammatory cytokine production and also eosinophilic, lymphocytic infiltration of drugs.
They actually work by reducing bronchial hyper reactivity, mucosal oedema, and also inhibits antigen antibody reaction. It provides sustained sympathomimetic relief by improving airflow, reducing asthma exacerbations, and resisting disease progression. They also provide with smooth muscle responsiveness towards beta 2 agonists.

Thus, the combination of these two drugs belonging from different classes helps in providing a comprehensive treatment approach for managing respiratory conditions.

It helps in dealing both the problems associated with asthma problems i.e. inflammatory problem is treated by beclomethasone and constricted bronchioles are treated by levosalbutamol.

This dual action Aerocort helps in stabilizing the ample situations related to respiratory illness such as patients requiring maintenance therapy and also for patients experiencing acute attacks.
