Dr Subash Gupta, one of the prestigious, well-known physicians for gastrointestinal and liver transplantation. Currently Working as a chief surgeon for liver transplant, hepato-pancreato-biliary with Max hospital, Saket, New Delhi with more than 40 years of experience in his journey.

He is also the chairman of Max centre.  Gained a wonderful reputation for his hard work in the field of Biliary, pancreas as well as liver transplant. Not only this, he is also a member of Delhi Medical Association and Medical Association of India.

To know briefly about his journey towards patient’s health, he has done more than 300 surgeries for living donor transplants successfully lasting for about 12-17 hours continuously.

For his valuable contributions, he is honoured with pioneer in Development of Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT) which brought revolution in the journey of transplant surgery.

About Dr. Subhash Gupta

  • In 1993, he completed his training under Dr. Paul McMaster in the liver unit in Queen Elizabeth hospital, Birmingham, England.

  • He then worked as Junior consultant in Organ transplantation at St. James University hospital in Leeds in 1995.
  • Then he served as Senior consultant at Ganga Ram hospital where he put his hand to gaining experience in the Liver Transplant unit as assistant of Dr. S Nundy.
  • Since 2006, he has served in the Organ transplantation unit in Apollo hospital, New Delhi.
  • He is the founder of the Liver Transplant centre in Max healthcare in 2016 and is working as a director of that unit since then.
  • He also worked as Associate Professor at University of Queensland, Australia as surgeon. 

He performed his first liver transplant in March 2019 at King George’s Medical University.

Alongside, going through his journey, he has vast experience in Different departments like hepatobiliary, and pancreatic disorders.

His specialization is treating disorders related to gallbladder like gallstones, bile duct cancer, cholecystitis. Alongside, one cannot forget his contribution in the field of transplant surgery.

In October 2021, he was the first surgeon in India to successfully reuse a liver transplant. 

He also carried out a Surgical marathon in February 2021, by running 7 operation theatres, 2 donors and 4 patients within 25 hours. 

Education

  • Completed under graduation, medical and surgical education and also completed MD degree from AIIMS, Delhi.
  • Completed post-graduation degree in general surgery from AIIMS.
  • Completed his specialization in Gastroenterology surgery in the year 1989.

Specialization

As mentioned about his specialization, he specializes in treating liver problems like liver cirrhosis, metabolic illness, liver cancer, and other problems like vascular problems, metabolic illness, and also cystic diseases.

Other than this, he has expertise in treating end stage liver diseases, inflammatory disorders related to it, liver infections, hepatitis conditions. His expertise even extends to treating pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer

Dr. Subhash has given his greatest inputs through his learning and efforts in changing lives of the patient and helping in improving patient outcomes and helping to come out of these conditions.

He is famous transplant surgeon due to his great credentials in this industry. He has even gained a fellowship in Royal college of surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow because of his learning, competencies and hard work.

  • Vishist Chikitsa Rattan award on Doctor’s day in year 2012 by Delhi Medical Association
  • Excellence Award 
  • Yash Bharti award by UP government in 2016
  • Dr. B. C Roy award in 2016 by MCI
  • He was honored with the title “honorary Professor of Kazakhstan” for his skills and contributions across the globe in 2016.

  • He and his team, in 2014, were one of the finalists for the category “Surgical team of the year” for BMJ India awards
