Into the system of Ayurveda and traditional medicine belongs the jujube fruit, which in Sanskrit is called Badara. This small but effective fruit is widely used in Ayurvedic medicines owing to its cure properties for various diseases and health benefits

According to the Ayurveda system of classification, Badara is categorized in terms of taste, energy and post ingestion effect. It is described as:

  • Rasa (Taste): Sweet (Madhura)
  • Virya (Energy): Cooling (Shita)
  • Vipaka (Post-digestive effect): Sweet (Madhura)

These characteristics of Badara fruit Sit and make it suitable for Pitta & Vata dosha with little or no effect on Kapha dosha. Due to its inherent quality of cooling, it is especially effective in managing conditions owned by Pitta, including inflammation and heat.

The jujube fruit has numerous and varied uses in health, meaning that they are ideal additions to people’s diets and especially supplemental medicine.

In reference to the fruit, the Malayalam name for the jujube fruit is Ilu. It is also a popular curry ingredient in Keralite food and has been consumed as a seasonal fruit in the state. 

As noted, it is eaten fresh or dried and is incorporated into different local dishes to provide another taste and admixture of nutrients.
