It acts by binding to COX-1 and COX-2 receptors of prostaglandin synthetase. Its main function is treatment of pain but is also used for treating fever and inflammation. This means it has weak anti-inflammatory action.

To elaborate its action, let’s look into the matter of how pain occurs. Prostaglandins, the major cause of pain, are synthesized from arachidonic acid by cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes.

This enzyme is available in two forms : COX-1 and COX-2. These COX enzymes are released only when they receive signals from cytokines released at the site of inflammation in the body.

Once they are released, they further produce prostaglandins (PG’s) which induces pain. And, our mefenamic acid works as a COX inhibitor for relieving pain.
